Overview

Biomedical instrumentation is the discipline that turns a physical principle, an electrical potential, a pressure, an optical absorption, a temperature, into a signal that can be used clinically. Behind every electrocardiogram, pulse oximeter, patient monitor and laboratory analyzer there is a chain of sensors, transducers, signal conditioning and analog-to-digital conversion, all subject to the same safety and essential-performance requirements that govern regulated medical devices.

This 16-hour Professional Certificate Course introduces the fundamentals of biomedical sensors and signal conditioning, and the architecture of the most common clinical modalities: ECG, EMG, EEG, blood pressure and pulse oximetry. It also introduces applied-part classification and basic electrical safety under IEC 60601-1, building the block-diagram literacy needed to read, discuss and document an electromedical instrument.

The Introductory course prepares participants for the Advanced level (BME-530-A), where verification protocols, applied-part classification and risk control under ISO 14971 are developed in depth.
